Katniss Everdeen is a teenage girl living in District 12. This is one of the impoverished coal mining regions in the country of Panem. The Hunger Games is an annual game that forces one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in which they must fight to the death leaving a final winner. Katniss’s sister, Primrose is chosen but Katniss steps forward to take her place in an act of heroic self-sacrifice.
Katniss is a strong contender in the competition and has the important skill of survival taught to her by her dad. She learned to hunt and is extremely skilful with her bow and arrow.
At the end of the Hunger Games, she emerges the victor with her partner Peeta. Peeta is in love with Katniss but she loves someone else. Peeta and Katniss use their relationship to try to win votes and compassion from weather viewers so they can get more aid during their survival in the games.
